Our Story

You will find us at 130 Main St in the beautiful village of South Berwick, Maine.

First Baptist Church has been actively engaged in the South Berwick community for many generations. For the last five years, the church has been led by Pastor Scott McPhedran. He and his wife, Karen, are natives of the Detroit, Michigan area and have been in service to the church since 2013.

As a community, we are open to change that will help us accomplish our vision. We trust that we are reflected as a caring and welcoming group of people with a strong prayer life and a desire to to serve faithfully.

We are affiliated with the American Baptist Churches - USA and American Baptist Churches of Maine.

The Road beyond silk: how merchants and missionaries linked the east and west

(or, how archives found at the counting house led six Chinese students on a quest for discovery)

A Berwick Academy class of six students visiting from China has been exploring historic connections between China and South Berwick. They are offering this unique public presentation of history and music.

Starting with a visit to the old Berwick Historical Society archives, the students found documents brought back to the US by Abbie Sanderson of South Berwick, a Baptist missionary to China in the early 20th century. One of the hundred-year-old documents is Sanderson’s hymnal translated into Chinese, including the favorite “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

The students range in age from 7th grade through junior year in high school, and have been getting to know a couple of town institutions — The Old Berwick Historical Society and the First Baptist Church of South Berwick. Two members of the church who still remember Sanderson will also speak.

The students have studied the historic trade relationship between China and the US, the checkered and troubling reality of the opium trade, and the ensuing wars and opening of trade ports which allowed the entrance of opium but also of missionaries and western music into China.

Questions and discussion are invited. Refreshments will be served.
